Sunday March 29th 3pm-6pm
Join us at the beautiful Prickly Pear nursery for an afternoon of natural dyeing. We will be using the cochineal insect to dye silk scarves in a range of red, pink, and purple. The Aztecs cultivated this insect ,which lives on the prickly pear cactus, for it’s beautiful scarlet pigment which can now be found in many modern cosmetics and foods. In this workshop you’ll learn the basics of natural dyeing, some simple shibori techniques, how to use fresh and dried cochineal, and how to make a range of colors by altering the chemistry of the dye. Participants will take home two silk scarves naturally dyed with cochineal.
